Dasara, or vijayadashmi or Dashera is a very important day in the calendar for Hindus.
On this auspicious day, we are reminded that the good can win over the evil and keeps us encouraged to do so.
So what is the evil that resides amongst us?
Bad habits and laziness is the most troublesome evils residing in us.
On this auspicious day let me enlighten you all with a few verses from Bhagwat Geeta from chapter 11 which is also called as vishwaroopdarshan.
And thus Krishna says
Arjuna (who represents we all, or the common man), behold as concentrated within this body of mine the entire creation consisting of both animate and inanimate beings , and whatever else you desire to see. Verse 11.
And thus Arjuna saw supreme deity possessing many mouths and eyes, presenting many a wonderful sight, decked with many a divine ornaments, wielding many uplifted divine weapons, wearing divine garland and clothes, besmeared all over with divine sandal paste full of wonders infinite and having faces on all sides. Verse 10, 11
As moths rush with great speed into the blazing fire for extinction out of their folly, even so all these people are with great rapidity entering Your mouth to meet their doom. Verse 29
Sri Bhagvan says ‘I am inflamed Kala ( the eternal Time-spirit), the destroyer of worlds, I am out to exterminate these people. Even without you all those warriors arrayed in the enemy’s camp must die. Verse 32
Rather time is a limited commodity in everyone’s life and the life of this universe, and we have to strive to put a stamp of our life on this time spirit. Only indestructible thing in this universe is the time.
And to do so we should strive hard to put to good use whatever limited time we have.
And this kaal bhairav, or the black time, why black because we don’t know what lies ahead in time, total suspense, and the color of suspense is black and therefore the color of Krishna is Black because he was a man (or god of suspense, and did what conventional wisdom will desist one from doing so) who taught us unconventional wisdom. I am sure this would make us all special individuals who would be remembered for a long long time( we all are special individuals).
So let us all celebrate this special day and make ourselves great individuals.
Happy Vijayadashmi
Regards
Suwas
